What we can prescribe
In Ontario, nurse practitioners practise independently and can prescribe most medications, with a few exceptions.
- Most antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals
- Hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy
- Blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes medications
- Mental-health medications (SSRIs, SNRIs, some others)
- Asthma inhalers and other respiratory medications
- Selected pain management treatments when clinically appropriate, with careful assessment and follow-up
What we refer out
Some care is best handled by a specialist. When that’s the case, we coordinate the referral and stay involved.
- Long-term chronic-pain management, usually handled by a pain specialist
- Complex psychiatric medication regimens (referred to psychiatry)
- Procedures that need a hospital or surgical suite
- Highly specialized conditions (e.g., cardiology, respirology), where we coordinate the referral
